Lord Henry himself claims he has finally found a "subject made to his hand" that he can now dominate (41). What does Aeneas give up in order to found Rome? This artistic meta-narrative is completed by the "selling of his soul" to the painting. Any aging or sin Dorian commits is relayed through the painting as his body remains youthful and unscathed. This suggests Lord Henry and Basil are literally placing Dorian Gray's beauty in the realm of object entities; he is the portrait to be viewed and not a subject person. In chapter one I have shown that both Aestheticism and Nietzsche promote art for art's sake and believe that art justifies itself and does not need to have a purpose since art is purpose in itself, the purpose of life. Since Nietzsche points out that both the Apollonian and the Dionysian govern the human existence, I will show how these two forces compete in each character in their search for beauty. Anybody answer this? Ten points 🙂 x o my gosh i just read this book in english! The male gaze is an artistic point of view developed by John Berger in his book The Ways of Seeing.
